When to get it checked
Signs your engine needs attention
Engine problems rarely fix themselves. Catching them early usually means more options.

Sluggish acceleration, or the engine struggling up hills or when carrying a load.

Overheating
The temperature gauge climbs or a warning light comes on. Pull over safely and turn the engine off.

Blue, black or persistent white smoke can each point to a different engine problem.

Knocking, shaking at idle, or a flashing check engine light.

It depends on the problem. If the engine is overheating, the oil pressure light is on or the check engine light is flashing, it is safest to stop driving and have it checked.
It can. Some noises come from minor parts, others are an early sign of wear inside the engine. Having it checked early usually gives you more options.
